Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 9, 2026

Patently Legal ("we", "us") provides tools to research US copyright and patent law and to check products for potential IP issues. This policy explains what we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. The service is in private beta, so these practices may evolve as the product matures.

Information we collect

  • Account information — when you sign up with Google or email, our authentication provider (Clerk) provides us your email address and, if available, your name and profile image.
  • Content you submit — your research questions, clearance descriptions, watchlist topics, and findings you save.
  • Usage and technical data — actions you take (messages sent, clearances run), approximate token usage, timestamps, and standard log data needed to operate and secure the service.

How we use your information

  • To provide the service — answer your questions, run clearance analyses, and show your history and saved findings.
  • To send the watchlist digest emails you set up, and transactional messages about your account.
  • To enforce fair-usage limits and protect the service from abuse.
  • To understand usage and improve the product.

AI processing of your inputs

To generate research answers and clearance memos, the text you submit is sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) and an embeddings provider (Voyage AI) for processing. We do not use your inputs to train our own models. Please avoid submitting confidential or sensitive personal information you would not want processed by these providers.

Service providers

We rely on a small set of providers to run Patently Legal. Each processes data only to provide its service to us:

  • Clerk — authentication and account management.
  • Neon — database hosting for your account, content, and usage data.
  • Vercel — application hosting and delivery.
  • Anthropic — AI processing of your queries; Voyage AI — embeddings.
  • Resend — sending digest and transactional emails.
  • Public sources we query on your behalf: CourtListener (case law), Google Patents, and the US Copyright Office.

Cookies and sessions

We use cookies that are necessary to keep you signed in and to operate the service, set by our authentication provider. We do not use advertising cookies.

Data retention

We keep your account and content for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. You can ask us to delete your account and associated data at any time (see Contact).

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information, including encryption in transit and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security.

Your choices and rights

You can request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal information by contacting us. Depending on where you live, you may have additional rights under applicable law. We will respond to verified requests as required.

No sale of personal information

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

Children

Patently Legal is intended for users 18 and older and is not directed to children. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

International users

The service runs on infrastructure that may process and store data in the United States and other countries. By using the service, you understand your information may be processed in those locations.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as the product evolves. We will revise the "last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice.
