Terms of Service

Last updated: June 9, 2026

These terms govern your use of Patently Legal during our private beta. Please read them — especially the disclaimers, since this is a research tool, not legal advice.

Acceptance of these terms

By accessing or using Patently Legal, you agree to these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the service.

What Patently Legal is — and is not

Patently Legal is a research and analysis tool for US copyright and patent information. It is not a law firm and does not provide legal advice, and using it does not create an attorney-client relationship. Outputs are informational, may be incomplete or out of date, and are not a substitute for advice from a qualified attorney. Make decisions that carry legal risk only after review by your own counsel.

Beta service

The service is provided free of charge during a private beta, on an "as is" and "as available" basis. It may change or be discontinued at any time and is subject to fair-usage limits we may adjust. We may use aggregate, de-identified usage information and your feedback to improve the product.

Your account

You are responsible for activity under your account and for keeping your login secure. You must provide accurate information and be at least 18 years old.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • use the service for unlawful purposes or to infringe the rights of others;
  • disrupt, overload, scrape, reverse engineer, or circumvent the limits or security of the service;
  • resell or provide the service to third parties without our permission;
  • rely on the service as a substitute for advice from a qualified attorney.

Your content

You retain ownership of the content you submit. You grant us a limited license to process it (including via our AI and infrastructure providers) solely to operate and provide the service to you. You are responsible for the content you submit and for ensuring you have the right to submit it.

Our intellectual property

The service — including its software, design, and branding — is owned by us and protected by law. These terms grant you no rights in our intellectual property except the limited right to use the service.

Third-party data and sources

Results are derived in part from public sources such as CourtListener, Google Patents, and the US Copyright Office. We do not control those sources and do not guarantee the accuracy, completeness, or timeliness of any information.

Disclaimers

The service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted or error-free, or that any result is correct or complete. Nothing in the service is legal advice.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, we will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss arising from your use of or reliance on the service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the service will not exceed USD 100.

Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless from claims arising out of your content, your use of the service, or your violation of these terms or applicable law.

Feedback

If you send us feedback or suggestions, you grant us the right to use them without restriction or any obligation to you.

Termination

You may stop using the service at any time. We may suspend or terminate access if you violate these terms or to protect the service. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination will survive.

Governing law

These terms are governed by applicable law, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. As the service moves out of beta, we will update this section to specify the governing jurisdiction and the process for resolving disputes.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the product evolves. We will revise the "last updated" date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Continued use after changes means you accept the updated terms.
